The 1968 and 1969 4-4-2 cars had been awesome but were limited by the GM ban on any engine over 400 ci (6.5 litres) in its mid-sized cars. By 1970 they'd lifted that ban and Buick were free to slot in their 455 ci (7.4-litre) big-block, which made the new 4-4-2 very quick on the street. As standard, the 4-4-2 had heavy-duty springs and shocks, plus thick front and rear anti-roll bars, but the W-30 also added a glass-fibre hood with cold-air induction, a rear trunk spoiler, an increase in power, in part thanks to an aluminium intake, and 7 x 14 (178 x 356 mm) Rallye wheels which gave great handling. Typical for Buick, they retained luxury inside the car, with high-backed bucket seats, tuck 'n' roll vinyl, wood veneer and power windows. Performance extras included a Muncie manual gearbox which, though a little tricky to use off the line, didn't sap so much engine power.
