cars were redesigned in 1970s, and this included Mercury with its Cyclone.
Besides smoother lines and contours, it got a new engine, the 429 ci (7-litre)
big-block Ford, which packed huge torque. Mercury being a premium Ford
brand meant the ride quality was very good, though the car was happier
going quickly in a straight line than cornering. Underneath it used Mercury's
Montego unitary platform, stretched to improve the ride on the heavy-duty
coil sprung front and leaf sprung rear, with front anti-roll bar. The
styling was the, by then, popular fastback muscle-car styling and a hidden
light front grille with distinctive gunsight-type grille centre. Adding
the Dragpack option gave a Hurst shifted four-speed plus higher rear end
gearing, making the Spoiler a low-14-second quarter-mile machine. The
Cyclone only lasted another year before being axed.
