| | MERCURY COMET CYCLONE (1965) CAR HISTORYCar review on MERCURY COMET CYCLONET'he Comet was
seen by most to be granny's grocer-getter, but that changed when the Cyclone
GT option came in 1965. The car was essentially an upmarket Ford Falcon,
being stretched in the wheelbase but retaining the wishbone front end
and leaf spring rear. What made it better was the revised spring and shock
rates to improve handling. The engine was Ford's 289 ci (4.7-litre) Falcon/Mustang
V8, but in the Cyclone fitted with a higher-lift camshaft, 10.5:1 compression
pistons, and a four-barrel carb. Through the Top Loader manual the car
did 15-second quarters. Externally the styling took cues from Pontiac's
best-selling GTO, with square ends, stacked headlights and slim roof pillars.
At a cost of $346 more than the Falcon, it was only natural that the Cyclone
had a plusher interior, so featured tinted glass, bucket seats, power
windows and even seat belts!
