top of the SUV market as soon as it arrived in 1998 was the Lincoln Navigator.
Using the floorpan and running gear of the Ford Expedition, which itself
could be traced back to the F-150 pick-up, the Lincoln developed the chassis
further with the addition of adjustable air springs which were controlled
by an automatic load-levelling facility. When off-road this set-up lifted
the car by an inch for extra clearance. The live axle was the only dated
part, but it was strong and improved by extra locating links featuring
upper and lower trailing arms plus a Panhard rod. The engine was a larger
version of the Ford's modular unit. Called the 'Triton', it had a single
cam per bank and sequential fuel injection and was highly reliable, going
for 100,000 miles (160,000 km) between service stops. It was competitively
priced in top trim at $43,000.
