had always concentrated on luxury before light weight, but in 1978 that
changed with the launch of the Mk V Continental. While looking almost
identical to its predecessor the Lincoln Coupe, it was almost 500 lb (227
kg) lighter, which made it perform and handle better. This didn't stop
designers having a field day with the options list, however, as the Mk
V featured every possible extra to pamper the occupants. The Diamond Jubilee
edition as shown celebrated the start of the Lincoln company 60 years
earlier in 1918, after Henry Martyn Leiand walked out of Cadillac having
disagreed with GM boss William C. Durant about wartime production. Leiand
named the company after the president whom he had first voted for in 1864,
and over a century later the Cadillac bearing the anniversary edition
displayed glitz on wheels and sold over 72,000 in total for 1978.
