known as a wartime vehicle which kept American servicemen on the move;
in fact it's often referred to as the original off-roader. The car and
name developed through the decades, and Chrysler bought the right to produce
it in 1988, when they took bought the American Motor Company. That spurred
the release of the Jeep Wrangler Renegade, with wider arch extensions
and a 244 ci (4-litre) straight-six. The Sahara was simply a limited edition
of the same Jeep Wrangler, even though it looked slightly different, thanks
to new sheet metal (all bar the doors, in fact) and round headlamps, fitted
from 1996-on models. Like the original Jeep, the Sahara used a strong
ladder frame underneath with fro.it and rear live axles. The gearboxes
available were a 5-speed manual or 3-speed auto, with standard low and
high four-wheel drive ratios.
