Imperial a marque in its own right in 1955 and aimed it squarely at the
luxurious Cadillacs and Lincolns. The spectacular-looking 1957 Imperials,
deigned by stylist Virgil Exner, had ideas which were continued into the
early 1960s. His quad headlights continued, but this time he put them
in small body coves to make the car stand out from the prevalent integrated
look. The car continued the tradition of a separate chassis which helped
reduce noise intrusion and vibration, important for such a luxury car.
Chrysler's torsion bar suspension was also fitted up front, which was
a big improvement over coil springs, to make Imperials one of the best-riding
premium cars. The tooling costs of the Hemi meant a new engine was designed,
called the 'Wedge Head'. Not only was this cheaper, but it also required
less tune-ups and was more flexible throughout the rev range.
