| | FORD TORINO TALLADEGA (1969) CAR HISTORYCar review on FORD TORINO TALLADEGAThe late 1960s
held some of the fiercest NASCAR battles, with Ford and Chrysler slugging
it out. In response to the Dodge Charger 500, Ford came up with the Torino
Talladega which did well in this debut year with 30 wins. The car was
based on the Fairlane Torino which appeared in 1968. Underneath it used
a double wishbone front and a leaf spring rear, though the back had staggered
shocks to prevent wheel hop. All Talladegas came with the 428 ci (7-litre)
Cobra Jet big-block V8 engine, rated at 335 bhp (250 kW), even though
output was close to 450 bhp (336 kW). The motor had 10.6:1 compression,
a steel crank, stronger con rods and a 735 cfm Holley carb. The suspension
used stiffer springs and shocks plus a thicker anti-roll bar up front,
while at the rear a Traction Lok diff and 3.25:1 gears were stock. For
aerodynamics the nose was stretched by 5 inches (127 mm) and tapered.
