SC (Super Coupe) was introduced in 1989 and won Motor Trend magazine's
'Car of the Year'. The new super sleek styling was just part of the deal,
as the car sat on an all-new platform with A-arms up front and a full
independent rear with pivoting axle halfshafts. The SC was a celebration
of 35 years of the Thunderbird, and came with black wheel and paint. It
also had beefier springs and gas shocks, plus four-wheel disc brakes which
were vented at the front to aid cooling. While T-birds of the past had
used four cylinders, V6s or V8s, the new car was exclusively V6 powered,
and the SC used an Eaton supercharger in conjunction with sequential fuel
injection to boost output. Dual tailpipes was one way of telling the SC
from regular Thunderbirds, along with the 7x16-inch (178x406mm) alloys
on 225/60 Goodyear Eagle tyres.
