were abandoned for 1961 in the third-generation Thunderbird, but the car
remained as popular as ever, with over 73,000 built in that year alone.
The new cigar shape was powered by just the one engine option: the 390
ci (6.4- litre) big-block. It was a heavy engine, but by now the Thunderbird
wasn't so much a sportscar as a luxury cruiser. For that same reason,
it was softly sprung and hence didn't corner very well, though it was
better than initial impressions would lead you to believe, and once at
a reasonable speed, the handling turned more neutral. The styling has
turned this era T-bird into a classic, and cars like the Sports Roadster
shown remain much in demand, partly because of the enclosed tonneau rear.
Also available that year was the Coupe, Landau and convertible. The car
was restyled in 1964.
