in 1979, the Series 3 Mustang was well overdue for replacement come 1993.
To show what a performer it could be, Ford made the best version possible
with their aftermarket performance equipment. Its engineers used the 215
bhp (160 kW) GT as a base then added a new grille, sill panel mouldings,
rear valance and spoiler, and gave the model special 17-inch (432 mm)
wheels and low-profile tyres. Lowered suspension, with softer linear rate
springs, improved the car's handling and gave a more civilized ride. Power
was up to 235 bhp (175 kW) thanks to the addition of GT40 heads, a special
intake, bigger throttle body, larger injectors, a higher-lift roller camshaft
and roller rockers. Disc brakes all around improved braking significantly,
but the car was like the GT. The Cobra R was a race-only version with
air-con, radio and rear seats removed, thus saving weight.
