| | FORD MUSTANG COBRA R (1995) CAR HISTORYCar review on FORD MUSTANG COBRA RThe 'R' stood
for race and Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT) made sure they had the
fastest Mustang ever built on their hands. Based on a regular Cobra, the
R was stripped of its sound-deadening, radio, rear seats, rear-window
defrost, electric windows and air-conditioning to save as much weight
as possible. The car even came with basic trim seats, as Ford knew these
would be changed for race versions by owners. The suspension used uprated
Eibach progressive rate springs along with Koni adjustable shocks, while
up front sat a thicker anti-roll bar. The engine came from Ford's Lightning
truck, this being a 351 ci (5.8-litre) V8, upgraded with GT40 heads, a
special Cobra intake, SVO camshaft and larger mass air meter. The motor
put out so much torque that Ford had to fit the stronger Tremec 3550 gearbox.
With racing slicks the R could easily do 12-second quarter-mile passes.
