rod carries the now legendary SOHC Ford engine which was developed in
order to compete with Chrysler's Hemi-engined NASCAR racers. It made an
impressive 675 bhp (503 kW) on Ford dyno, but it was outlawed immediately
because it was too good. The engines did make it on several factory-sponsored
A/FX drag racers, which subsequently won their class in 1965. Even so,
it never made it into a production car, though some de-tuned engines were
sold over the counter. One of those made its way into this modified Galaxie,
which has had to have the hood reshaped to fit the induction system. Elsewhere
the car features stiffer front suspension to cope with the weight, plus
there's a Top Loader gearbox and 4.30:1 geared rear end with Detroit Locker
differential. Quarter-miles zip by in just 13 seconds for this Starliner,
but it looks like a period factory racer.
