cars, the 1966 Galaxie 500 used the simple formula of a massive engine
up front driving the rear wheels. It had stacked headlamps, all new suspension,
and the emphasis was more on comfort, despite obviously being a muscle
machine. The A-arm suspension was very good and went on to be used in
NASCAR competition, while at the rear, coil springs and control arms replaced
the former leaf spring set-up. It all added up to a refined ride but the
big-block up front could soon change that. Up to 1965 the biggest engine
in the Galaxie had been the 427 ci (6.9-litre), but the 428 ci (7-litre),
also part of the FE range of big-block Fords, was built mainly to produce
torque. It was a more streetable engine than the 427 engine, but still
had plenty of power and incredible torque at low rpm. Inside, being a
top-of-the-range car, the 500 featured leather seats and wood trim.
