A successful beginning in Falcon sales of 1960 led Ford to develop the car in the following years. Although they'd managed to sell over 410,000 cars in '60, the next year they produced a Falcon Sprint model with V8 to increase power and its appeal, then in 1962 they sent race cars to Europe for use in rallying events. In 1964 the car was restyled with squarer, neater lines, but faced tough competition from the new Mustang which, ironically, was a Falcon underneath. This race Falcon is today used in historic circuit competition in the UK. It has lowered and stiffened suspension and in order to shed weight its hood, trunk and front fenders have been moulded in glass-fibre. The engine is a High Performance V8, which means slightly more compression, a high-lift camshaft and free-flowing exhaust. It works through the brutally strong Borg Warner T10 'Top Loader' gearbox.
