beat by Pontiac and Chrysler in the NHRA's Super Stock class of 1963,
Ford went all out for the following season and created the Thunderbolt.
It didn't pretend to be anything but a full-blown drag machine, available
through Ford only to racers. To fit the huge 427 engine, an outside company,
Dearborn Steel Tubing, had to widen the shock towers, plus move the A-arm
pivot point out by an inch. The car's high beam headlights were replaced
with air intakes to feed the engine, and simple steel wheels were fitted
as many got replaced by lightweight racing alloys. The leaf sprung rear
end had a torque arm locating the axle to help launch the car, and the
battery was mounted in the trunk for improved weight distribution. The
body featured lightweight glass-fibre panels where possible, but it was
the race-tuned engine which helped push the car to 11.7-second quarters.
