at the time, the Skyliner offered a practical hardtop coupe plus.the style
of a drop top. The retractable hardtop roof was a masterpiece in engineering
and required 7 electric motors, 13 switches, 10 solenoids, 8 circuit breakers
and over 600 ft (182 m) of wiring to make it function. The car was fairly
conventional underneath with a separate chassis and double wishbones up
front with leaf springs at the rear, though the frame did have an X-brace
to give it extra strength as the roof was not part of the structure. On
the body, one of the best changes for the 1959 model year was the switch
to large, round tail lights, which became a trademark feature of early
1960s Fords. Standard was the Mercury's 292 ci (4.78-litre) Flathead V8,
though with fuel at 20 cents a gallon, the big-blocks were favoured, and
this has the 352 ci (5.3-litre) Police Interceptor special.
