| | DODGE VIPER (1992) CAR HISTORYCar review on DODGE VIPERInitially a concept
at the 1989 Detroit international Auto Show, the Viper had a massive public
response, and Dodge knew it would have to go into production. Theory was
that it would be a modern-day 427 Cobra, and in fact it had a similar
layout and, like the original 427 model, huge torque thanks to the biggest
production engine in the world at the time. The monster motor was caged
in a tubular steel chassis which also had independent wishbone suspension
front and rear. Drive was through the rear wheels and torque went through
a specially designed Borg Warner gearbox with a lockout shift mechanism
to go from first gear straight to fourth under light throttle. The motor
was so tractable it could pull from as little as 500 rpm in sixth gear.
The body was constructed in reinforced glass-fibre to help keep it light,
while the brakes were 13-inch (330 mm) Brembo discs and callipers.
