wars were about being ahead of the competition, and that's what prompted
Chrysler to create the Super Bee in 1968. It was a bare-bones Coronet,
achieved by stuffing the monster 440 ci (7.2-litre) into the lightest
intermediate bodyshell. The huge amount of power came from extras such
as a free-flow twin exhaust system, but mostly it was though the 'Six
Pack' carb set-up. This consisted of three two-barrel Holley carbs, on
which the centre one only would work at part throttle, but when the throttle
was pushed further, the other two carbs would open up for more fuel and
full power that could propel the car down the quarter-mile in 13 seconds.
Power wasn't the whole picture; the car could handle, thanks to heavy-duty
torsion bar front suspension. The Super Bee had a tough Dana axle with
4.1:1 gearing from the factory, plus black steel wheels.
