Car review on DODGE SPIRIT R/T

The first Spirit came about in 1988 as a replacement for the ageing Aries compact, but unlike the Aries, came only as a four-door sedan. It looked like any other sedan around at the time, but Dodge turned up the wick when they debuted the limited edition R/T late in 1990. It used the engine which had been developed throughout the 1980s and which had already seen duty in the Omni GLH-S and Shelby Charger GLH, this being a 134 ci (2.2-litre) turbocharged engine with twin balancer shafts to keep vibration to a minimum. Through an intercooler and with twin overhead camshaft, its output was enough to beat many of the original muscle cars on the quarter-mile, but the Spirit still had the practicality of a four-door sedan. Inside the driver's car they continued with sporty bucket seats and a Getrag five-speed manual shift. Just 1,300 models were made in the one year.
