| | DODGE HURST HEMI DART (1968) CAR HISTORYCar review on DODGE HURST HEMI DART Drag racing of
1960s was used to test products, and it worked extremely well in some
cases, especially cars. The 1968 Hurst Hemi Dart was very successful in
the NHRA Super Stock class, with Hurst Performance and Chrysler producing
72 cars as stripped-ont racers. They had the radio, heater, rear seats,
sound-deadening and windows winders removed, had the battery mounted in
the trunk, and came in flat grey primer ready for racing paint schemes.
The fenders and hood were glass-fibre, while the steel doors and fenders
were acid dipped to thin them and thus lose more weight. Bigger rear arches
were fitted to cater for the large slick tyres and a Dana axle was fitted
with 4.88:1 race gears. With 12.5:1 compression, a forged crank, solid
lifter cam and twin Holley carbs, the engine was highly tuned and was
eventually rated at a more truthful 500 bhp (373 kW) by the NHRA.
