| | DODGE CHARGER R/T (1971) CAR HISTORYCar review on DODGE CHARGER R/TIn 1971 the Charger, which had set the standards
for full-sized sedan muscle-car performance, got a restyle. The front
end was wider and had a one-piece fender for better crash protection,
and this was matched at the rear where there was also a sharper roofline
slope. The car was virtually unchanged on the chassis, still with torsion
bars at the front and multi-leaf rear springs on the Dana 60-equipped
rear axle. The 440 ci (7.2-litre) Magnum engine was a racer's dream, with
an ultra-strong crankshaft and connecting rods, plus a rigid cast-iron
block. It also had high flow cylinder heads and an effective intake manifold
with triple two-barrel carbs (the famous 'Six Pack'), so it's easy to
see how the cars were so effective in NHRA Super Stock drag-racing class.
Just 3,118 R/Ts were built in 1971, and only 63 had the extra option of
the legendary Hemi.
