car finally arrived in 1970 and was well named with the likes of the Cougar,
Mustang and Camaro around on the street. It came with a huge list of options
including 12 engines, and in Dodge tradition, the R/T (Road/Track) package
was the high performance model. The base engine was the 335 bhp (250 kW)
383 ci (6.3-litre) V8, but the car could be ordered with the mighty 426
ci (7-litre) Street Hemi or 440 ci (7.2-litre) V8s, which gave out 425
bhp (317 kW) and 375 bhp (280 kW). The Challenger was built on Chrysler's
brand new E-body platform, sharing its firewall and front subframe with
the bigger B-body cars like the Charger. The new car used Chrysler's proven
torsion bar front suspension with beefed up anti-roll bar, and rear leaf
springs on a live axle, the latter requiring the Sure-Grip limited-slip
differential option to make use of all the torque.
