Performance started to make a welcome return to many American vehicles in the mid-1980s, and this saw the rebirth of the SS range on Chevrolet's Monte Carlos. The Aerocoupe had been designed and released in 1986 to compete with Ford's Thunderbird on the NASCAR tracks. Just 200 were built that year but it was well known the fastback style rear window and sloping nose could give the Monte Carlo a few extra mph on the top speed, much needed in NASCAR. More than 6,000 were built in 1987 and featured a separate chassis with stiffer springs, a larger front anti-roll bar, gas shocks and 7 x l5-inch (224 x 381mm) forged alloy rims with 225/60 tyres rated to 150 mph (241 km/h). The small-block engine got a hotter camshaft, new cylinder heads and intake, and an electronically controlled Rochester four-barrel carburettor. Monte Carlos outnumbered the Aerocoupe; 125,000 were produced.
