The Corvette has been called 'America's favourite sportscar' and for good reason: it works as a road car, a fast GT tourer, a streets/strip racer and a circuit car. The Sting Ray which came along in 1963 made the car formidable around the world, taking on the likes of Jaguar and Ferrari and, in many cases, being successful. It was developed from a one-off race car originally built by Bill
Mitchell and styled by Larry Shinoda, and by 1966 the car had developed into a formidable machine. The chassis was a steel ladder frame design with independent suspension front and rear, and the car had vented disc brakes all around. The engine was set well back in the frame to give near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution, making it handle well. The 427 ci (6.9-litre) big-block was the biggest engine offered in the Corvette, the L88 version the most powerful at 435 bhp (324 kW).
