| | CHEVROLET SUBURBAN (1966) CAR HISTORYCar review on CHEVROLET SUBURBANLaunched in 1935,
the Suburban is one of Chevy's best-loved name tags, and is still in production
today. It has always been based on a truck chassis, but as the owner of
this vehicle wanted something different, he decided to use the front and
rear axles off a 1980 GMC Jimmy, for four-wheel drive. Up front a powerful
small-block Chevy provides all the power needed for either off-roading
or towing, though it's something of a road performer too, with a sub-11
second time to 60 mph (96 km/h). To adjust the height, a set of Airlift
shocks are used at each corner, but the biggest changes are inside, with
a full custom interior, supportive buckets eats, digital gauges mounted
inside the original housings, plus air-conditioning and a powerful sound
system. It all adds up to a vehicle which can accomplish virtually everything
a late-model Suburban can, but in the style of a classic body.
