Car review on CHEVROLET II SS

With plain styling, the Chevy II was more often regarded as a leisurely old people's car. That all changed when Chevrolet installed their L79 Corvette 350 ci (5.7-litre) V8 into the 1966 SS model. Having a lightweight body, the SS could easily mix it up with the best muscle cars, though looked more sedate than any, with just the badges giving it away. Underneath it relied on drum brakes, which could get frightening, given the performance which was on tap, and wheel hop was a problem under acceleration because of the simple leaf spring rear end. The transmission to have was the close-ratio four-speed manual which could get it easily into the 14-second range on the quarter mile, though the auto wasn't far behind. There was a base L-30 275 bhp (205 kW) engine too, which had double the production run of the L-29, though the latter is more collectable.
