SS was debuted purely as a concept, but as with many such ideas, GM knew
it would have a winner if the public responded well. They did. The car
made the showroom floors by 1996 and showed how much modern technology
could improve a muscle car. The SS was fitted with the LT1 small-block
350 ci (5.7-litre) V8, with multi-point fuel injection and revised engine
management. It could push the Impala to sub-7-second 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h)
times and impressive top speed, while giving 21 mpg (7.43 km/I) on a run.
A heavyweight at just under 2 tons (2.03 tonnes), it could handle very
well, thanks to thicker anti-roll bars, stiffer springs and de Carbon
shocks. Heavy-duty police front spindles and huge 12-inch (305 mm) disc
brakes all around helped the inspiring feel, and owners didn't go without
extras on the interior, with power everything and leather seats.
