|
| | CHEVROLET IMPALA MODIFIED (1958) CAR HISTORYCar review on CHEVROLET IMPALA MODIFIEDThe 1958 Impala
was the last of Chevrolet's 'tri-Chevys' because of the 1955 to 1958 cars
all looking very similar and being an almost identical size. All three
were favourites for modifying as they could be ordered with the small-block
V8 as standard, and if they had the base straight-six, the larger engine
could easily be found second-hand and slotted in. What made the 1958 model
most famous was a custom version in the movie American Graffiti,
driven by then actor but now famous movie director, Ron Howard. The car
shown is typical of the 1960s customs, with the original chrome, a new
tube grille, scallop paint work, reversed steel wheels, triple 1959 Cadillac
tail lights and a tuck 'n' roll interior. The powerplant is a stroked
small-block Chevy with triple carbs which helps the car to 14-second quarter-miles.
The Impala gets its low ride through adjustable hydraulic suspension.
