from the cancelled Corvette SS racing programme, GM Chief stylist Bill
Mitchell and designer Larry Shinoda styled their own body, called it the
Stingray, then campaigned it with their own money. It was to be the shape
that denned the 1963 second-generation Corvette, right down to the split
rear window which Mitchell fought hard to keep. The Sting Ray came in
both hardtop or open top form, and was the first Corvette to use fully
independent suspension which dramatically improved the handling, allowing
it to complete with the Jaguar XKE race cars. The rear used a single transverse
leaf spring which ran either side of the differential, which itself could
be ordered with anything from 3.08:1 to 4.56:1 gearing. The base engine
was the 327 ci (244 kW), but potential racers could order the Tuelie'
fuel-injected 360 bhp (268 kW) with four-speed manual and Posi rear.
