of the muscle-car wars, Chevrolet played its trump card with the launch
of the LS-6 454 V8. At the same time, GM lifted its displacement on mid-sized
cars which meant that they could be finally fitted with engines over 400
ci (6.5-litres). The result was the Chevelle SS454. The car was basic
underneath with coil springs all around, but the SS package included the
F41 suspension which had stiffer front springs to cope with the big-block's
weight. Maganum 500 wheels were fitted to every SS Chevelle but even being
wide, fitted with Polyglas tyres barely provided traction. The engine
had high compression pistons, rectangular port heads and solid lifters
so could rev well for a big engine. It received high-pressure air while
on the move through a vacuum-operated flap on the cowl induction. Just
4,475 SS454s made it out of the factory, but all were 13-second quarter-mile
cars.
