the Camaro came early in 1970 so these models are often referred to as
the 70 1/2 Camaros. It was an instant hit on the streets, especially when
Chevy announced the performance version, top of which was the SS396. The
engine was actually 402 ci (6.6 litres) through an increase in bore size,
even though GM badged it still as a 396. Two states of tune were available,
in the L-34 with 350 bhp (261 kW) or L-78 with 375 bhp (280 kW), and while
the 350 version came with 10.25:1 compression and a Rochester four-barrel
carb, the 385 went higher still on compression, adding an aluminium intake
and a Holley four-barrel. Underneath, the extras included a heavy-duty
F41 suspension package with front and rear anti-roll bars, a 12-bolt rear
axle with choice of ratios and 7 x 14-inch (178 x 356mm) wheels. Cars
ordered with the four-speed Muncie gearbox also got a Hurst shifter.
