As always, the Camaro's SS badge stood for Super Sport, and way back in 1967 the original Camaro SS had the 295 bhp (220 kW) Turbo-Fire 350 ci (5.7-litre) V8 engine, plus special SS hood, badges and stripes. The newer version's output might not seem much higher, but with the high-tech all-aluminium powerplant the SS could launch hard and get to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just five seconds, then down the quarter-mile in 13 seconds. The brand new LSI engine featured Ram Air induction to increase power from the usual 305 bhp (227 kW), and a six-speed gearbox was standard. While a live axle remained at the rear, up front the SS was fitted with unequal-length wishbones and uprated suspension. Huge 9 x 17-inch (229 x 432 mm) alloys and 275/40 tyres meant the SS could pull 0.9gs on a skid pad. Being the fastest ever SS too makes the 1998 SS by far Chevrolet's most complete Camaro ever.
