were indeed fast for their day and indeed still are, in the fastest accelerating
motorsport, they look pretty tame. But as soon as the 1960s cars made
it out of the showroom, they were put on to drag strips, then stripped
and tuned for speed. During the late 1970s the cars took cues from the
Pro Stocks classes, which used a stock bodyshell with huge drag tyres
fitted underneath to get traction. It developed further, and in the late
19870s and 1990s, these street cars started turning in times that a Top
Fuel dragster would have been proud of two decades earlier. This Camaro
is typical of the most recent street-racing machines, with a full tube
chassis lightweight front and rear racing suspension, 21-inch (533 mm)
wide slicks on the rear and a huge horsepower engine barely useable on
the street. The Jerico gearbox has a lever per gear to aid rapid full-throttle
changes.
