of US 4x4s, the Blazer was one of the first of what is now known as an
SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle). It has become an icon and its name is still
used by GM. The K5-code vehicle started out in 1969, offered by Chevrolet
as a roomy on/off road vehicle with a 120 bhp (89 kW) base engine or 307
ci (5-litre) and 350 ci (5.7-litre) V8. It was utilitarian in design,
bnt made a formidable off-roader. Because it was stiffly sprung to cope
with any terrain, on the road it tended to bounce around on anything but
smooth roads, but it could cruise effortlessly at 70 mph (113 km/h), so
was ideal for US roads. The Blazer's chassis was separate and very strong,
and it mounted the engine well back for perfect 50:50 weight distribution.
The 350 ci (5,735 cc) V8 was the most popular engine choice and it was
driven through an automatic with two-speed transfer case with high and
low ratios.
