Unusually, it was a 1987 twin turbo Alfa Romeo GTV6 which had impressed Chevrolet bosses enough to call on the services of Reeves Callaway. With his Alfa boasting 230 bhp (172 kW), well up on the stock model, he was asked to do the same with a Corvette, and three years later the Callaway 'Sledgehammer' was debuted. It was an 880 bhp (656 kW) supercar with the body redesigned by French-Canadian stylist Paul Deutschman. The Speedster's appearance at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 1991 led to 50 orders. Underneath the dramatic low body, with 7 inches (178 mm) chopped out of the stock Corvette's screen, were adjustable coil-over shocks, plus Brembo brakes using vented discs and four-pot callipers. The engine was stripped and fitted with a forged crankshaft and new pistons to allow the fitting of RotoMaster turbos. Although pricey at $107,000 new, the cars have only ever gone up in value.
