big competition for American manufacturers and Cadillac decided in 1996
that the best way to fight them was to have one of its own. So it started
using an Opel model sold in Europe as the Omega, and named it the Catera.
The only differences visually were the front and rear light clusters,
which went full width on the rear and at the front were separated by a
grille more akin to previous Cadillacs. The suspension was fully independent
and had struts up front plus a strut and multi-link rear for exceptional
ride quality and handling - enough to rival BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus.
The engine was a compact 183 ci (3-litre) V6 with 24 valves, twin overhead
camshafts and three-stage intake runner lengths to boost torque production
throughout the rev range. Powerful braking is available, thanks to vented
and ABS-assisted discs all around. The Catera remains in production.
