styled the 1971 Riviera and forgot about the ultra-conservative Buicky
styling which had happened up until 1971. The new model was larger and
heavier than previous models, but the dramatic design, which brought the
car to a boat-style point at the rear, led to the car being nicknamed
the 'boat tail Buick'. The Riviera rode on a separate chassis, with an
A-arm independent front end plus live axle rear using coil springs. The
Gran Sport package added uprated springs, stiffer shocks and a fatter
front anti-roll bar, With fuel very cheap at 30 cents per gallon, Buick
didn't concern buyers by fitting in their 455 ci (7.4-litre) big-block
engine which, with its long stroke, made huge torque and the car more
of a luxury cruiser than straight-line performer. The Riviera was produced
for just two years before being redesigned then axed.
