BUICK GS 400 STAGE 1 CARUSED CARS HISTORY > CAR MODEL > BUICK GS 400 STAGE 1 |
|
| | BUICK GS 400 STAGE 1 (1969) CAR HISTORYCar review on BUICK GS 400 STAGE 1 Buick loaded
its GS model with luxuries, but also gave it a powerful engine with the
Stage 1. The drive was leisurely, and the handling would turn to understeer
when pushed, but in a straight line it was incredible. Its 400 ci (6.6-litre)
'Nailhead' engine is a bored and stroked version of the 340. The Stage
1 got 11:1 compression ratio, a four-barrel carb, low-restriction exhaust
and the Cold Air package twin snorkel hood induction, which was claimed
to an 8 percent increase in power. An uprated GM Turbo-Hydramatic three-speed
auto was aided by a Positraction limited-slip differential to help put
the power down through skinny bias-ply tyres. The fastback coupe was the
most body style, though the convertible has remained the most desirable,
as just 1,776 were made. In 1970, the GS 400 was replaced by the GS 455
as Oldsmobile continued to uprate their car's performance.
