CARFAX flags two types of mileage discrepancies - Odometer Rollbacks and Mileage Inconsistencies. Both are triggered when a more recent odometer reading is less than an older reading. The difference is in the source of the readings and the vehicle’s mileage history.

A "Potential Odometer Rollback" occurs when the readings are collected by a DMV or other verified source.
