What does the CARFAX Free Lemon Check service tell me?
Answer
Most states define a "lemon" as a vehicle that continues
to have a defect that substantially impairs its use, value, or safety
after a reasonable number of attempts to repair the car.
The Free CARFAX Lemon Check uses a vehicle’s unique VIN (Vehicle
Identification Number) to search its database in order to determine
if a Manufacturer’s Buyback/Lemon title exists for that vehicle.
Currently 29 states provide Lemon data to CARFAX, with new states
being added continually.
It is important to note that state laws vary as to the disclosure
requirements for a "lemon buyback", and state practices
vary as to the recording of these events in database records. For

documents. All cars and light trucks built after 1981 have
a unique 17-character VIN that contains valuable information

Test Results - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA) provides 3 different ratings - full-width frontal
crash test, side impact crash test, and rollover resistance.
The frontal crash test indicates how well the safety features

The side-impact test conveys the chance of a severe chest
injury, while the rollover resistance rating estimates the
