    Most states define a "lemon" as a vehicle that continues to have a defect that substantially impairs its use, value, or safety after a reasonable number of attempts to repair the car.

    The Free CARFAX Lemon Check uses a vehicle’s unique VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) to search its database in order to determine if a Manufacturer’s Buyback/Lemon title exists for that vehicle. Currently 29 states provide Lemon data to CARFAX, with new states being added continually.
